This webinar, titled The Transformative Power of Legislative Theatre, will introduce the fundamentals of legislative theatre—a powerful advocacy and citizen participation technique developed by Augusto Boal in the 1970s. In legislative theatre, community members, advocates, and policymakers collaborate to creatively address social issues through live, participatory policy experimentation. Community actors perform scenes inspired by their lived experiences with restrictive policies and systems, inviting the audience to step in, rehearse, and respond with real-time solutions on stage. This unique, interactive process allows participants to develop and test policy ideas in partnership with decision-makers and organizers, envisioning pathways toward meaningful social transformation.
During this hands-on workshop, we’ll begin with engaging games and exercises that lead into co-creating a short legislative theatre scene. Following this, participants will join a mock session where traditional power dynamics are flipped, placing community voices at the forefront. The session will close with a collaborative brainstorming to explore how these proposed policy solutions can be applied in real-world contexts. At the end, we’ll vote on the suggested actions, encouraging policymakers to make tangible commitments toward change.
This dynamic webinar provides a safe, creative space to simulate decision-making processes, address urgent issues, and propose innovative policy solutions. Participants will leave empowered with new tools to envision and advocate for impactful social change.
The project is supported by the Open Society Foundations.
The first webinar series is made possible thanks to ALDA. European Association for Local Democracy and the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values Programme (CESV) of the European Commission.
